What is llms.txt, and does a Dubai business need one?

The short answerllms.txt is a simple text file on your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt). It tells AI crawlers what your business is and which pages matter most. It is a new idea, not a ranking factor, and AI companies do not promise to use it. But it costs nothing and takes an hour, and it gives you one clear place to say who you are. Think of it as a sitemap with a short introduction, written for AI.

What it is

A website has long had two files for machines. robots.txt says which pages crawlers may visit. sitemap.xml lists every page. llms.txt is a third, newer file, meant for the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and the rest. It answers a different question: not "what pages exist" but "what is this site, and where is the good stuff".

It is written in plain text with simple headings. A short one for a Dubai clinic might read:

# Marina Skin Clinic
> Dermatology and laser clinic in Dubai Marina, DHA licensed, since 2016.

## Services
- Laser hair removal: pricing and FAQ
- Acne treatment: approach and before-and-after policy

## About
- Our doctors: names, DHA licence numbers, languages
- Location and hours

Each line links to a page. The whole file is usually under a hundred lines.

What it does, honestly

Three things, and the third is the one that matters.

First, some crawlers read it. The standard was proposed in 2024 and adoption has been uneven. Several AI companies have said they check for it; none has said it changes how they rank. Treat any claim that llms.txt "gets you cited" as a sales line.

Second, it is a clean statement of identity. The engines build a picture of your business from dozens of sources, and when those sources disagree they hedge or go quiet. llms.txt is the one place on the web where you write the canonical version: name, what you do, for whom, where, since when. If your website is large or old, this is the fastest way to tell a crawler which of your 400 pages are the ones you stand behind.

Third, writing it forces the right conversation. The hour spent deciding which ten pages matter, and how to describe the business in one sentence, is the same work that improves the homepage, the Google profile and the LinkedIn page. Most businesses that make the file end up fixing those too.

What it does not do

  • It does not replace a sitemap. Keep both.
  • It does not keep crawlers out. That is robots.txt.
  • It does not make a thin page quotable. If the page it points to does not answer a question, the pointer changes nothing.
  • It does not get you into "best agency in Dubai" lists. Those come from other people's pages, not yours.

Does a Dubai business need one?

Need is too strong. Should have one, yes, for the cost. We put it in every site we touch, including our own, and we have seen no downside. We would not pay anyone for it as a separate service, and we would be cautious of an agency whose AEO proposal leads with it.

Where it helps most: businesses with large sites, businesses whose name is shared with others (common in the UAE, where the same trading name appears across emirates), and businesses that have changed what they do and still have old pages indexed. In each case the file lets you state the current truth in one place.

How to make one

  1. Write one sentence that says what the business is, for whom, where, and since when. If that sentence is hard to write, that is the finding.
  2. List the ten pages a buyer would need: services with prices, about, team, location, case studies, FAQ.
  3. Group them under plain headings. One line each, with the link and a few words on what the page answers.
  4. Save it as llms.txt at the root of the site. Check it opens in a browser.
  5. Update it when you add a page that matters. Ours is updated with every article.

Ours is at samuraconsulting.com/llms.txt if you want a template. Copy the shape, not the content.

Frequently asked

Is llms.txt a ranking factor for ChatGPT or Google?

No. It is a proposed standard that some AI crawlers check. No engine has said it affects ranking. Its value is a single clear statement of what your business is and which pages matter.

What is the difference between llms.txt and sitemap.xml?

A sitemap lists every page for search engines. llms.txt describes the business in plain text and points to the handful of pages that matter most, for AI crawlers. Keep both.

How long does it take to create llms.txt?

About an hour for a small business, most of it spent deciding which ten pages matter and how to describe the business in one sentence.

Should I pay an agency to create llms.txt?

Not as a separate service. It should be included in any AEO work. Be cautious of a proposal that leads with it.
