How to run an AI visibility audit yourself (and when to pay for one)

The short answerAn AI visibility audit answers three questions: are you named when customers ask AI assistants for a business like yours, who is named instead, and which sources the engines rely on. You can run a basic version in an hour: ten customer questions, four engines, logged out, recorded in a sheet with the sources. It will show you the gap. What it will not show is the full source map for your category, your competitors' entity setup, or the order to fix things in; that is what a paid audit adds. Samura's costs AED 1,999 and is credited against any program.

The one-hour version

  1. Write ten questions your best customers would ask an AI assistant. Each should contain your service, your area and a buyer detail: "orthodontist in Dubai Marina for adults, price", "contract manufacturer for sauces in Sharjah, small runs", "property manager in JLT for an overseas landlord".
  2. Open four engines in a private window, not logged in: ChatGPT (search on), Gemini, Perplexity, Claude.
  3. Run every question in every engine: forty answers. For each, record in a sheet: named or not; the businesses named; the sources cited (click the small links).
  4. Add your company name as an eleventh question in each engine. This shows whether the engines know you exist and whether their facts about you are right.
  5. Count. Mentions out of forty is your score. The list of sources, sorted by how often they appear, is your to-do list.

Reading the result

Named often, details right: maintain and widen. Named in one engine only: the others are reading sources you are not on; look at their citations. Named with wrong details: an identity problem; fix name, address and description everywhere first. Not named at all: the most common result, and not a verdict on your business; there is nothing on the web the engines can quote about you for those questions yet.

What the one-hour version misses

  • Ten questions is a small sample; engines vary a lot with wording. A paid audit runs fifty.
  • You see which sources are cited, not whether you can get onto them or what they require.
  • You see competitors' names, not why they are chosen: their structured data, their profiles, their review patterns.
  • You get a gap, not an order of work. The order is what saves money, because some fixes unlock the others.

When to pay for one

If the one-hour version shows you are not named and you are about to spend money on AI search work, pay for the full audit first. It is cheaper than one month of the wrong program. If the one-hour version shows you are already named for most questions, you may not need an agency at all; keep the weekly log and fix what moves.

Frequently asked

What is an AI visibility audit?

A test of whether AI assistants name your business for the questions your customers ask, who they name instead, and which sources they rely on, with a list of fixes.

Can I do an AI visibility audit myself?

Yes, a basic one: ten customer questions, four engines, logged out, recorded with sources. It shows the gap but not the full source map or the order of fixes.

How much does a professional AI visibility audit cost in Dubai?

Samura's is AED 1,999 for 50 prompts across five engines, with a source map, competitor analysis and a prioritised fix list, credited against any program within 30 days.

Why should the test be run logged out?

Logged-in accounts remember your earlier questions and are more likely to mention businesses you have typed before, which is not what a new customer sees.
