The short version
SEO answers the question "how do I get to page one?" AEO answers a different question: "how do I become the recommendation?" A buyer who types "best jewellery store in Deira" into Google sees ten links and chooses. A buyer who asks ChatGPT the same thing gets two or three names and an explanation. If your store is not one of those names, you did not lose a click. You were never in the conversation.
What SEO does
Search engine optimization has three parts that have not changed much in fifteen years. Technical work makes the site fast and crawlable. On-page work matches each page to the words people search for. Off-page work earns links from other sites, which Google reads as votes of confidence. The result is a position in a ranked list, and the business gets traffic in proportion to how high it sits.
This still matters. Every AI engine that searches the web pulls from an index built by Google, Bing or both. A site that cannot rank for anything is unlikely to be read by an AI engine either. SEO is the floor.
What AEO adds
AI engines do not return a list. They write a paragraph, and they decide what goes in it by looking for sources they trust, then summarising what those sources agree on. That changes the job in four ways.
Entity consistency. An AI engine reasons about companies, not keywords. It needs to be sure that "Samura Consulting Group" on your website, on LinkedIn, on Google Maps and on a directory are the same business. If the name, address, phone or description differ, the engine's confidence drops and it reaches for a competitor it can confirm.
Answer-first content. A page that opens with three paragraphs of introduction gives an AI engine nothing to quote. A page that answers the question in its first fifty words gives it a clean sentence to lift. The engines reward pages that read like answers.
Structured data. Schema markup (Organization, Service, FAQPage, Person) tells a machine exactly what a page is about, who wrote it and what the business offers, without having to guess from prose. Google has used it for years. AI engines lean on it harder.
Citations on trusted sources. Each engine has sources it returns to. For agency and service questions in the UAE, those include business directories, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, local news and community sites. Being described consistently on those sources is what earns a place in the answer. This is the part of AEO that most resembles PR.
Where GEO fits
You will see "GEO" (generative engine optimization) used alongside AEO. In practice they describe the same work from two angles. AEO focuses on being the answer to a direct question. GEO focuses on being cited when the engine generates longer content, such as a comparison or a guide. We treat them as one discipline, and so do most practitioners.
A worked example from Dubai
Take a dental clinic in Jumeirah. Its SEO is decent: it ranks on page one for "dentist Jumeirah." Ask ChatGPT "which dentist in Jumeirah is good for implants?" and the clinic does not appear. Why? Its Google Business Profile says "dental clinic" and its website says "dental and aesthetic centre." Its LinkedIn page has a different phone number. There is no page on the site that answers the implant question directly. And the two directories ChatGPT cited for that answer have never heard of it.
Fixing that is AEO work: one description everywhere, an implants page that answers the question in the first paragraph, schema on the page, and a profile on the two directories. None of it changes the Google ranking much. All of it changes whether ChatGPT names the clinic.
Which one does a UAE business need first?
Both, in the right order. If the website is slow, has no clear service pages or cannot be crawled, fix that first; it is SEO work and it takes weeks, not months. Then do the AEO layer on top. A business that skips SEO and goes straight to AEO is building on sand. A business that does SEO only is invisible to the fastest-growing way buyers in Dubai now choose.
At Samura we do not sell them separately. Every program starts with the technical foundation and ends with weekly tracking across five AI engines, because the point is not the ranking or the citation. The point is the enquiry.

Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI engines draw on the same web index that search engines build, so a site with poor SEO rarely gets cited. AEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement for it.
Can I do AEO without changing my website?
Only partly. Off-site work such as directory profiles and a Google Business Profile helps, but the engines quote pages, so the website needs answer-first content and structured data to be cited.
Does AEO work for small businesses in Dubai?
Yes, and often faster than for large ones, because a small business can make its identity consistent everywhere within a week and publish focused answer pages without committee approval.
How do I know if AEO is working?
Run the same set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews every week and record whether your business is named and which sources are cited. That log is the only honest measure.
