Is AEO worth it for a small business in Dubai, or only for big brands?

Sufia AramBy Sufia Aram, Managing PartnerPublished 24 October 20264 min read
The short answerYes, if your customers ask specific questions: a service in one area, one specialty, one language, one type of customer. AI answers give three to five names, and a small business that clearly states its area and specialty often beats a big brand that talks about everything. It is not worth paying for yet if your Google profile is not verified, your website does not say what you do, or you have no reviews. Fix those first; they are free.

The question behind the question

Owners of small businesses in Dubai usually ask this with a particular worry: that AI search is another channel where the big brands with big budgets win and everyone else pays for scraps. In Google that worry was often justified. In AI answers it mostly is not, and the reason is structural.

Why AI answers favour the specific

A Google results page has ten links and the big brand can occupy three of them. An AI answer has three to five names, chosen to match the question as asked. When a customer in Dubai types "physiotherapist in JLT who treats runners", the engine is not looking for the biggest clinic in the city. It is looking for the clinic whose pages, reviews and profiles say "JLT", "physiotherapy" and "runners" together. A twelve-person clinic that says those three things consistently beats a hospital group that says everything about everything.

This is the whole argument. Big brands win broad questions. Small businesses win specific ones, and most buying questions are specific.

When it pays

  • You serve one area. Marina, JLT, Business Bay, Jumeirah, Al Barsha. Customers ask by area. An engine can only name you for an area if your pages and profile name it.
  • You have a specialty. Off-plan only, Shopify only, dermatology only, F&B licensing only. The narrower the better.
  • You serve a particular customer. Expats relocating, SMEs under fifty staff, Arabic-speaking families, international buyers. The engines match on who the service is for.
  • Your competitors are large and generic. Their pages are written for everyone, which means they answer no one's question in the first paragraph. Yours can.
  • You already have some reviews. Ten real reviews that mention the service and the area are enough to start.

When it does not, yet

  • Your Google Business Profile is not verified or shows a free zone address nobody visits.
  • Your website does not say in plain words what you do, for whom, and where.
  • Your name, address and phone are different on different platforms.
  • You have no reviews from the last six months.

None of these need an agency. They need an afternoon. Do them first, because any AEO money spent before them is spent on a foundation that is not there. Our audit checks all four in the first ten minutes, and if they fail we say so before you pay for anything else.

What it costs against what it returns

A focused program for a small business starts at AED 2,999 for a month with us; other Dubai agencies that publish prices start between AED 3,000 and AED 5,500. Set that against one question: what is one new customer worth to you? For a clinic, a brokerage, a contractor or a B2B service in Dubai, one customer usually covers the month. The program does not need to produce many; it needs to produce a few, repeatedly, from questions you can win.

The honest caveat: the first month produces first appearances for specific questions, not a flood. Month two and three are where it compounds. If cash is tight, do the free fixes, run the five-minute test yourself, and come back when you can see the gap.

A simple decision rule

Write down the five questions your best customers would ask an AI engine. If each one contains an area, a specialty or a type of customer, AEO will pay for a business your size. If each one is "best company in Dubai", you are competing with the big brands on their ground, and the answer is to make your questions more specific, not to spend more.

Frequently asked

Can a small business in Dubai compete with big brands in AI search?

Yes, on specific questions. AI answers list three to five names matched to the exact question, so a business that names its area, specialty and customer type consistently is often chosen over a larger brand that speaks generally.

What should a small business fix before paying for AEO?

A verified Google Business Profile at the working address, a website that states what the business does and for whom, identical name and contact details on every platform, and some recent reviews. All four are free.

How much does AEO cost for a small business in Dubai?

Published programs start around AED 2,999 to AED 5,500 a month. Samura's one-month Launch program is from AED 2,999, with a one-time audit at AED 1,999.

How quickly does a small business see results from AEO?

First appearances for specific local questions typically in three to six weeks. Broader category questions take longer and depend on third-party sources.
