Does your Google Business Profile affect what ChatGPT says about you?

Sufia AramBy Sufia Aram, Managing PartnerPublished 22 October 20264 min read
The short answerYes, a lot. Google's own AI (Gemini and AI Overviews) uses your Google Business Profile directly for local questions. ChatGPT and Perplexity read the directories and review sites that copy your profile. A Dubai business with a verified profile, the right category, a plain description and recent reviews is much more likely to be named for 'best X near Y' questions. It is the first thing we check in any audit.

The short version

ChatGPT does not read your Google Business Profile directly. But for local questions, the profile is where the answer starts anyway, through two routes.

The first route is Google itself. Gemini and the AI Overviews at the top of Google results use the same local data that powers Google Maps. If your profile says you are a dental clinic in Jumeirah with 40 reviews averaging 4.8, Gemini knows that. If you have no profile, Gemini has nothing to say about you for "best dentist in Jumeirah", however good your website is.

The second route is everyone who copies Google. Directories, review aggregators and "best clinics in Dubai" articles pull your category, rating and opening hours from your profile. ChatGPT and Perplexity cite those sites constantly. So the profile reaches ChatGPT second-hand, through the pages ChatGPT trusts.

What the engines actually read from the profile

In rough order of weight:

  • Primary category. This decides which questions you are a candidate for. "Marketing agency" and "Internet marketing service" are different candidates. Pick the one closest to what customers ask for, not the one that sounds biggest.
  • Reviews, and the words in them. Engines read review text. A review that says "best place in Dubai Marina for laser hair removal" does more for that exact question than any page on your site. Ten reviews that mention specific services beat a hundred that say "great service".
  • Business description. 750 characters. Write it as a plain answer to "what does this business do and for whom", with the area named. No slogans.
  • Services and products list. Each one with a short description and, if you can, a price. Engines quote prices when they have them, and a published price is a reason to be named over a competitor without one.
  • Address and hours. Must match your website and LinkedIn exactly. A mismatch is the most common reason an engine describes a business with the wrong details or declines to name it.
  • Posts and photos. Less weight, but a profile updated every week looks alive, and the engines prefer alive.

The mistakes we see most in Dubai

Registered address instead of working address. Many UAE businesses are licensed in a free zone and work from an office in the city. The profile should show where customers come, and the free zone can stay on the licence. A profile pointing at a free zone business centre is often rejected by Google and ignored by the engines.

Wrong primary category. A software company listed as "Consultant" because the owner wanted to sound senior. The engines then never consider it for "software company in Dubai".

No reviews for a year. Engines weight recency. A profile whose last review is from 2024 reads as a business that may have closed.

Different names on different platforms. "Samura Consulting Group" on the website, "Samura Consulting" on Google, "SCG" on LinkedIn. To an engine these may be three businesses, each with a third of the evidence.

What to do this week

  1. Verify the profile if it is not verified. Nothing else counts until then.
  2. Set the primary category to the thing customers ask for. Add up to nine secondary categories, each one real.
  3. Rewrite the description as a plain answer, area included.
  4. Add every service with a one-line description and a price where you have one.
  5. Ask your five most recent customers for a review, and ask them to mention the service and the area. Do not write it for them.
  6. Check that name, address, phone and website are identical to your site and LinkedIn, character for character.

None of this requires an agency. It is the first week of any AEO program we run, and if a client has already done it, the first month moves faster and costs less.

Frequently asked

Does ChatGPT read Google Business Profile directly?

No, but it cites directories and articles that copy the profile's category, rating and details, so the profile reaches ChatGPT second-hand. Gemini and Google AI Overviews use it directly.

Which part of the profile matters most for AI answers?

The primary category, because it decides which questions you are a candidate for, followed by the text of recent reviews.

Should a UAE free zone company use its licensed address on Google?

Use the address where customers come. A free zone business centre address is often rejected by Google and carries little weight with the engines.

How many reviews does a Dubai business need?

There is no threshold. Ten recent reviews that mention specific services and areas do more than a hundred generic ones.
